Plano, Texas is one of our favorite places in America and you’ve got to know why. It offers beautiful and affordable housing, comfort and convenience at a low cost, and great schools, parks, and recreational facilities.
But today we’re going to talk about some fascinating little facts few people know about our much-loved city of Plano.
Let’s start with how the city got its name.
Neither Fillmore nor Foreman
In the mid-1800s, as more and more settlers arrived in town, a doctor submitted a request to name the city Fillmore—honoring the current president. This request was denied by postal authorities, who countered with the name William Foremen—the area’s original settler. Mr. Foreman did not oblige.
Hence, the doctor suggested a Spanish name that reflected the terrain: Plano (meaning plain).
Mr. Foreman, in the meantime, became the city’s first postmaster.
Winner of the wealthiest city in the US award
According to CNN Money magazine, Plano was the wealthiest city in the US in 2006. More recently, in 2018, the US Census Bureau awarded it the wealthiest city once again.
Among the best places to live
Not surprisingly, Plano has—over a number of years—ranked as one of the best places to live in the Western United States.
This may be thanks to great schools, fair taxation, and access to lots and lots of outdoor entertainment areas. In fact, the city is home to more than four thousand acres of open space where residents can enjoy leisure activities in the company of family, friends, and neighbors.
Trails for miles!
Speaking of leisure, Plano has 167 miles of trails for biking and 94 miles for walking or running. Plano is a city that promotes an active lifestyle for healthy inhabitants.
Festivals
The city of Plano hosts the annual Plano Balloon Festival and Plano International Festival.
The Plano Balloon Festival is usually held in September and includes a half marathon, 10k, 5k, and 1k run. The big draw, of course, is the festival’s magnificent fleet of hot air balloons. The festival is hosted by a non-profit agency dedicated to educating attendees about hot-air ballooning in a family-oriented environment.
Then there is the Plano International Festival, which is held at Haggard Park—smack in the downtown area. This event is all about helping people get to know other cultures and experience the beauty of diversity—something that is richly represented in the Plano community.
